Why Most People Fail Their New Year’s Resolutions, And How Consistency Changes Everything

January 21, 20262 min read

Every year I watch the same cycle repeat itself.

news year resolution constancy

January arrives and gyms fill up overnight. Motivation is high. Promises are made. People declare that this year will be different. As a professional fighter and personal trainer who has spent years coaching people through real, lasting change, I can tell you this with certainty:

Motivation doesn’t fail consistency does.

After the first four to five weeks, the excitement fades. The soreness sets in. Life gets busy. And the habits that were meant to change everything slowly disappear. Not because people don’t care but because they were never taught how progress truly works.

Nothing meaningful happens in just five weeks.
Real transformation requires time, structure, and repetition.

In fighting and in fitness, you don’t win because you trained hard for one month. You win because you showed up consistently, long after motivation wore off. The same rule applies to your health, strength, confidence, and mindset.

Another major reason resolutions fail is simple:

The goals are too big.

People focus on the end result losing 30 pounds, getting in the best shape of their life, completely changing their lifestyle while ignoring the small daily actions required to get there. Those small actions are not optional. They are the foundation.

You wouldn’t skip rungs on a ladder and expect to climb safely.
So why do we try to skip steps when it comes to our goals?

When progress feels slow or uncomfortable, excuses start to surface. Missed workouts turn into missed weeks. Challenges become reasons to quit instead of opportunities to grow. Before you know it, the resolution is gone and the cycle repeats next year.

Here’s the truth most people need to hear:

You don’t need a new year to create change.

There is no countdown clock on self-improvement. You don’t need January 1st, a Monday, or the “perfect time.” Growth can start today, with a commitment to something small and sustainable.

At Profound Fitness, Kickboxing and BJJ, we don’t believe in quick fixes or crash motivation. We coach people to build discipline, routine, and confidence through structured training, accountability, and community. Whether it’s personal training, kickboxing, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, fitness or self-defense, the goal is the same long-term results that last.

I challenge you to stop making one giant resolution a year and start making multiple small ones throughout it.

Train consistently.
Focus on the next step not the entire staircase.
Commit to progress, not perfection.

Small and steady always wins the race.

If you’re ready to stop starting over, our coaching team is here to help you build something real step by step.
